An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted off North Sulawesi province in central parts of Indonesia today, without issuing any tsunami warnings.
"The epicenter of the quake is 147 km southeast of Melongwan town and at a depth of 157 km under the sea floor," the head of the earthquake and tsunami mitigation department of the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua, ruling out the possibility that the quake would cause a tsunami.
The earthquake was felt by the residents, he explained, while there were no reports of casualties or material damage.
