Indonesia: Samaru Volcano Eruption (Social Networks)

At least 13 people were killed in an eruption of the Samaru volcano in Indonesia, and nearly another hundred people were injured, most of them from burns, authorities in the island of Java said this morning (Sunday), after a night in which ten people were safely rescued.

Samaru, the highest mountain on the most populous island in Indonesia, began emitting ash yesterday, which blackened the names of nearby villages whose residents had fled their homes.

Authorities said the eruption caused damage to a major bridge in the area and destroyed buildings.

902 residents were evacuated from their homes in the last day.

An official from Indonesia's search and rescue agency told a local news channel that the evacuation of residents was halted due to hot clouds.

Another local factor that makes the effort difficult is also heavy rocks and hot volcanic precipitation that restrict movement.

Indonesia's Ministry of Transport said today that the eruption did not cause disruptions to flights, although pilots are required to be careful of the volcanic ash.

The last time it erupted in January there were no casualties.

Samro, which is more than 3,600 meters high, is one of the almost 130 active volcanoes of Indonesia.

It also erupted last January, but without causing any casualties.

Indonesia extends to the "Pacific Ring of Fire," a very volcanically active region where the Earth's tectonic plates meet to form numerous earthquakes and volcanoes.
