Indonesia's National Disaster Management Council said today (Sunday) that the volcano on Mount Samaro killed 13 people and more than 300 families were evacuated from their homes.

It was also reported that heavy dirt clouds cover the island and do not allow emergency crews to rescue the trapped.

Emergency teams in the area report that they are still trying to gauge the current state of the outbreak.

According to the head of the East Java Disasters Agency, two districts were hit "very badly" following the eruption, which occurred around 3pm (local time) on Saturday.

A local rescue volunteer, Muhammad Firman Adygona, told CNN "there is concern that more miners or other victims may still be out there, but they may not survive because of the harsh conditions."

In videos posted on social media since the eruption, residents of the area are seen fleeing the clouds of smoke.

In other videos, people are seen crowding a mosque in one of the area's cities.

The state's emergency teams have been working since last night to evacuate the residents, with the aim of setting up temporary refugee camps in educational institutions and mosques, in order to provide everyone who needs food, masks, blankets and safe shelter.

At the same time, emergency services reported that rescue efforts were still ongoing because the roads were blocked with mud and piled trees.
