Pope Francis has called for an end to what he called the sinking of civilization, in reference to the migrants who die in the waters of the Mediterranean during their desperate attempts to reach Europe.
Sky News quoted the Pope as saying in a speech from the Greek island of Lesbos that the Mediterranean has become a cold tomb, and this large basin of water that was the cradle of many civilizations now appears as a mirror of death, calling to stop the sinking of civilization.
Pope Francis expressed his hope that the Mediterranean will be a place for a new future for the entire region.
Pope Francis arrived in Greece as part of a trip that includes Cyprus and Greece between the 2nd and 6th of December.
The Mediterranean is witnessing continuous attempts by hundreds of illegal immigrants to reach Europe to escape the crimes of terrorist organizations in their countries and Western interventions in their affairs, where more than 1,200 immigrants were killed in 2020 at sea.
