Lisbon, SANA-
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa dissolved parliament today in preparation for holding early general elections at the end of next January.
And Reuters news agency quoted the Portuguese president’s office as saying that “the president issued a decree to dissolve parliament before the early general elections that were previously announced and scheduled for next January 30.”
The decree to dissolve parliament comes on the last possible day to take this step, which must take place at least 55 days before the elections.
Opinion polls show the Socialists advancing with support between 38.5 and 39 percent, far ahead of the Social Democrats, who represent the main opposition, with support between 24.6 and 28.1 percent.
According to analysts, the political stalemate may continue after the elections, which could impede the implementation of projects funded by European Union funds to recover from the Corona pandemic and affect growth opportunities in Portugal.
