A driver and his companion were arrested this Sunday accused of running over a dozen people who were heading to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the Ministry of Citizen Security reported in a statement.

The incident took place in the Centinela neighborhood of the Coyoacán mayor's office, where, according to the text, the agents found nine members of a running club and three cyclists from Xochimilco “apparently run over”.

Among the injured, at least four people had "head trauma", six had "fractures", one had a contusion and another was in a "polyconstuted" condition, according to authorities.

The injured were taken to a hospital, the statement explained.

According to the Secretariat, the alleged perpetrator was "detained and attacked by citizens who witnessed the events."

It was not explained what would have led to the vehicle hitting people.

Both the motorist and his companion, only identified as two people aged 36 and 27, were arrested and made available to the Public Ministry, the statement added.

CNN is trying to find out if they both have lawyers representing them and how they come out.

The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheimbaun, said through Twitter that the motorist who ran over the people, whom she identified as "pilgrims", was "in a state of drunkenness", although she did not give further details to the respect.

The Mexico City Prosecutor's Office reported on Twitter that it initiated an investigation for the "crimes of culpable injuries due to vehicle traffic and resistance of individuals" after the incident.

A message sent by CNN to the Prosecutor's Office seeking more information had not been responded to this Sunday.

"I ask the Prosecutor's Office to apply the full rigor of the law," Sheinbaum wrote.

He added that he is "treating victims and their families," but did not specify in what way.
