Bad Tölz / Hohenfurch - Nicolas Berchtold's car cannot be overlooked.

18 fairy lights illuminate the interior of the wine-red Audi A4, with which the Hohenfurcher is on the road throughout the Oberland.

The 30-year-old from the Weilheim-Schongau district installed 140 meters of cable for this purpose.

The dashboard is wrapped in cotton wool, and there is a crib in the trunk

The whole car that is parked in the parking lot at the Tölzer Kolbergarten that evening is a single Christmas wonderland.

The dashboard is wrapped in cotton wool to simulate snow.

Small gift packages and all kinds of Christmas decorations are on top.

The rear-view mirror wears a little Christmas hat on the side.

Berchtold has also transformed the trunk cover of the station wagon into a winter landscape: In addition to trees, balls, a sparkling star and a smoker, there is a complete nativity scene with holy family.

“The three kings will come later,” says the 30-year-old.

It all started in 2014 with a sapling on the dashboard

He has always liked Christmas, says Berchtold. This has also been reflected in the truck driver's car since 2014. “It all started with a little tree on the dashboard.” From then on, more and more have simply been added every year. He's been driving a station wagon for three years now, and since then there's also room for Christmas things in the trunk. Berchtold relies on the hot glue gun so that everything does not fly around in the car during the first braking maneuver. Each part is meticulously attached. This takes a while. “If I work on the decoration for one to two hours every day, it would take me three weeks to finish the car,” he says. Over the years Berchtold has professionalized a number of things. In the beginning he still had to turn on each chain of lights individually, "now everything is on a switch". He built the distributor in the glove compartment, all the lighting depends on the car battery.

The Christmas lights only come on when the car is parked

Of course, he only turns the lights on when the Audi is parked somewhere, emphasizes Berchtold.

Always ask him the police, who have stopped the Christmas mobile many times.

Because even without lit fairy lights, the 30-year-old's passion can be seen from afar: a red nose sticks to the radiator grille, the car is decorated with reindeer antlers and at the back there is a matching tail.

A sledge and wooden skis are on the roof.

Here the police usually check that everything is properly secured.

“But as a truck driver, I am of course familiar with securing loads,” says Berchtold.

Anti-slip mats and lashing straps ensure that everything holds.

There have never been any complaints.

"The police usually laugh and take photos."

“I only lit the smoker once,” says Berchtold with a smile

Over the years, however, there have been things that didn't work so well with the decoration.

Spray snow on the windows turned out to be not very durable when it was wet.

“And I only lit the smoker once,” says Berchtold with a smile.

Normally, the Hohenfurcher would now be a guest at Christmas markets with his mobile.

He would also like to pay a visit to the one in Bad Tölz with his car next year.

Since there are no markets this year, he is now traveling all over the Oberland.

“People have always been very happy and also ask how they come up with an idea,” he reports.

Trophies for the car in the "Best of show" category

When it's not Corona, the 30-year-old also likes to go to winter car meetings.

He has already won a trophy twice with his car - in the “Best of show” category.

The Audi will not be decorated again until the end of January.

But Berchtold already has new plans for Christmas 2022: For example, the red nose on the radiator grille should also shine.

Until then, however, the Hohenfurcher has something completely different to do: In February he will become a father for the first time.
