Visit to Greece: the Pope received as Head of State rather than as a spiritual guide

STORY - In reality, this visit would have gone almost unnoticed if the center of the Greek capital had not been totally blocked.

"All eyes in the world were on Cyprus and Greece these days."

This is what we can read in the Cypriot Sunday press, which widely welcomed Pope Francis' first visit to Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe.

The sovereign pontiff continues to support the island, whose northern quarter has been occupied by the Turkish army since 1974, and has encouraged dialogue for reunification, while Turkey advocates separation into two states.

He also wished for the intensification of the dialogue for a rapprochement between the eastern and western branches of Christianity which are orthodoxy and Catholicism.

An ecumenical openness that does not leave indifferent in the ranks of the powerful Orthodox Church, within which the most eclectic tendencies often clash on minor subjects.
