Better.com's CEO accuses employees of "stealing" from the company for their lack of productivity, according to a report. A leaked video shows the controversial firing.

The chief executive of mortgage company Better.com, Vishal Garg, announced the layoff of more than 900 employees, 9% of its workforce, in a joint video call conducted by Zoom, according to the news network CNN Business this Sunday.

"If you are on this call, you are part of the unfortunate group that is being fired,"

Garg announced at the virtual meeting held on December 1 and whose recording was seen by the aforementioned medium and allegedly leaked to social networks.

"Your employment here ended with immediate effect," he noted.

In addition, he specified that the former employees were going to receive an email from human resources with

the details of their compensation

.

Among the reasons he decided to lay off nearly a thousand workers, Garg cited market efficiency, performance and productivity issues.

Fortune magazine reported that the CEO charged employees accused of

"stealing" from colleagues and clients for not being productive and working only two hours a day

.

Among those laid off was the

diversity, equity and inclusion hiring team

"It is the second time in my career that I do this and I do not want to do it. The last time I did it, I cried," Garg said during the videoconference that, according to CNN, was brief and lacking in empathy.

Better.com, in which the Japanese multinational Softbank invested $ 500 million in April, announced in May that it would go public through a SPAC (a Special Purpose Acquisition Company).

Last week he received $ 750 million in cash as part of the deal.

The company is prepared to have more than 1,000 million dollars in its accounts.

It is not the first time that Garg's way of acting has caused controversy.

As published by Forbes magazine in November 2020, he disparaged his employees through emails.

"You are TOO SLOW. You are a bunch of silly dolphins ... SO STOP. STOP. STOP RIGHT NOW. YOU'RE EMBRACING ME," he wrote in a message.
