A protester jumped on Eric Zamor, a Jewish far-right man who last week announced his candidacy for the presidency of France, and tried to strangle him at the first rally that exists - according to a video circulated online.
The protester was arrested shortly afterwards.
Zamor reportedly suffered minor injuries following the incident.
Zamor, 63, has nurtured a conservative audience thanks to a devout nationalist movement that opposes immigration, and one that sees France as a society under siege by foreign, Muslim and other influences.
Some of the things he said led to convictions and fines for hate speech - in 2011, he called Muslim immigrants “invaders” and in 2016 he said most drug dealers are Arabs or Africans.
He also angered many Jews in the country after questioning Alfred Dreyfus' innocence, and told CNews that if Israel has nuclear weapons, Iran should not be prevented from carrying nuclear weapons.

The violent attack took place at a rally that launched Zamor's campaign, in a suburb of Paris, in the presence of thousands of supporters, alongside a group of counter-protesters.
According to the Guardian, attendees applauded Zamor's calls to curtail immigration and whistled contemptuously whenever President Emanuel Macron's name came up, which Zamor hopes to oust.
According to recent polls, Zamor is not going through the first round, and far-right voters prefer Marin Le Pen over him.
Anti-racist activists were also reportedly attacked at the rally, rejoicing in front of her, and even a TV channel camera crew was forced to evacuate by their security guard, fearing the protesters would harm him.
On Saturday, Zamor was documented doing a triple finger to a passerby in Marseille, in response to making a similar gesture to him
