Covid-19: the pandemic has worsened the social emergency in Latin America

The social situation of the South American continent has worsened markedly: the poverty rate has increased by 3%, affecting 33.7% of the population, and that of extreme poverty by 1% (12.5%).


The pandemic has taken its toll in Latin America, the most affected region in the world. The number of Covid deaths represents almost 30% of the total victims, while the region accounts for 8% of the world population.

"Peru and Brazil were the most impacted, with almost 6,000 and 3,000 deaths per million inhabitants (less than 2,000 in France,"

said Sebastian Nieto Parra, head of the Latin America office of the OECD development center. The economic crisis was also the most severe, with a drop in GDP in 2020 of 7%, to 11% in Peru and 18% in Panama. A joint report from the OECD, United Nations and European Union, estimates that it will be necessary wait between 2023 and 2024 to return to the pre-crisis level of GDP per capita, and the loss of productivity will weigh on growth potential.
