PORTRAIT - This German photographer has followed the German Chancellor from her first steps as a young minister in the 1990s until today.

From our correspondent in Berlin

For twenty-four years, once a year, equipped with her two lenses, Herlinde Koelbl patiently photographed Angela Merkel, from 1991, after her appointment to the Youth Ministry of the Kohl government, until 2021, when the Chancellor leaves power, at 67 years old.

The portrait painter, 82, chose her model at the time, sensing that one day the shy but determined Angela could become Mutti, the favorite mother of the Germans.

And with the artistic ambition to discern the mark left on bodies by the exercise of power.

From 1991 to 1998, Herlinde Koelbl engaged in the same exercise with his predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, an editorial project that was interrupted that year.

In 2006, she repeated the experience with Angela Merkel, elected at the head of the country.

"I wanted to find out how the function has changed this woman"

, summarizes Herlinde Koelbl at
