The lecture, which was held by the branch of the Arab Writers Union in Homs for the researcher and translator Muhammad Al-Dunya, dealt with aspects of the social, political and economic status of women in ancient eastern societies.

Al-Dunya explained in a lecture entitled Women in Eastern Mesopotamia that written texts, archaeological finds, and Assyrian and Babylonian symbols confirmed that Sumerian Eve was the first female face to appear in the story of the creation of the world.

Al-Dunya spoke about the interest of the myths, traditions and laws in Mesopotamia for females, including the laws of Babylonian Ashnuna and Hammurabi of the Assyrian.

He noted lecturer, who documented his lecture from Arab and foreign sources that the country was marked by Sumerian women in which the profession of writing, which was limited to the daughters of wealthy families and staff.

Among the distinguished professions practiced by women in Mesopotamia, according to the world, is playing and singing on instruments, which was reflected in seals, archaeological finds, and clay figure inscriptions. There were also indications in some of the number that spoke about the specialization of a group of priestesses of temples in lamentation, mourning and sad playing, in addition to the Sumerian women’s abuse of many professions such as sewing and decorate hair.

He compares the world between different conditions of women in the civilizations of Mesopotamia between dealing with them as a commercial commodity that can be sold, bought and sanctified as deities such as Ninur Sak, the goddess of human creation and childbirth, and Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love, who was later known as “Ishtar”.

The lecturer stops at examples of women who assumed power, the most famous of which are the two Sumerian princesses, Buabi and Kou Baba, and this is the only woman who ruled the country alone without the participation of her husband or son.

He also reviewed the laws related to the marriage of Mesopotamian women, such as her dowry and inheritance, and cited many historical texts that indicate her position, lifestyle and way of thinking.

It should be noted that the researcher “Al-Dunya” is licensed in the French language, and he is a member of the Writers Union and the Secretary of the Homs Writers Union. He has forty translated books, novels and short stories issued by the Ministry of Culture and hundreds of articles and studies translated in many local and international periodicals.
