Left me and I will save you: the economy of the Meretz and Dafna Liel gig

The appointment of Minister Tamar Zandberg's partner as chairman of the Herzl Center has provoked quite a bit of criticism. But not from the political correspondent of News 12 Dafna Liel, who will chair a paid panel.

Zaki is not just a political appointment but Zandberg's husband.

So how is it possible that Liel receives money from a body headed by Sarah's husband that she surveys?

This may be puzzling, and perhaps even some unreasonable arguments can be made

Vision, for laxity: This ad (see below) for the "Vision vs. Reality" conference was published on Friday on the front page of Haaretz. Also last Friday there was an announcement for this conference. The conference is organized by the Herzl Center of the Zionist Organization. At the end of September, Uri Zaki, the partner of the Minister of the Environment, Tamar Zandberg, was appointed to head it. The conference is probably one of the first actions in the organization.

The conference is attended by three journalists, two of them as moderators (Eran Singer wrote for the affairs of the Arab society here 11 and Purat Nassar from News 12). Led by Daphne Liel, the political correspondent for News 12.

Zaki is not just a political appointment of Meretz.

This is Zandberg's husband.

So how is it possible that Liel receives money from a body headed by Sarah's partner that she surveys?

This may be puzzling, and perhaps even some unreasonable arguments can be made.

Liel is no different from most reporters, certainly from the worlds of television, who also enjoy panel and lecture guidance, sometimes in a way that really touches their areas of coverage.

A recent and notable example of this is Matan Khodorov, the economics correspondent for News 13, who only last week moderated the conference of the accounting firm BBDO.

Severe visibility problem

"The story of Zaki's problematic appointment did attract attention because of the problematic, otherwise it happened and will happen all the time. It's totally a news story that Liel is supposed to cover critically, not enjoy."

But in this case, there is another floor, more problematic: last week an article was published in "The Hottest Place in Hell" about Zaki's appointment. According to the publication, Zaki, who organizes the conference and summarizes the conference and whose name appears twice in the ad, was appointed to the position after Minister Zandberg spoke with Minister Lapid. Zandberg did not deny that she spoke with Lapid, although sources close to her say that he was never asked to do so and that this was false information that reached the hands of quite a few journalists, and was rejected.

These are all political matters. The relevant question is will the Channel 12 political reporter ask them one difficult question on the subject after that? Maybe the subject had already passed her by and she flipped through it? If such a story were to come to her door now, would she publish it? Even if one gives full credence to Liel's credit and integrity one has to agree that there is at least a serious visibility problem here.

By the way, here are some examples from the past week of places that actually addressed the issue:

The original exposure with a strong headline, in Haaretz's editorial this week, Sami Peretz in an opinion piece with a tough headline, Maariv-103 ran it in a full day loop, another column in the hottest spot.

A very partial list.

Another source, well versed in the field of lectures and conferences, explains how the method works: "These conferences do not have an audience. It is just a way to distribute refreshments and create commitment. There will be more conferences that Liel will lead, as well as its members."

According to the source, "the story of Zaki's problematic appointment did attract attention because of the problematic, otherwise it happened and will happen all the time. It's totally a news story that Liel is supposed to cover critically, not enjoy."

The right-wing Twitter is also furious: a complaint to Yoamesh and 433

Madafna Liel responded: "This is a conference of the Herzl Center that deals with integrating Arabs against Herzl's vision and not a political conference in any way."

In this context, it should be noted that according to "The Hottest Place in Hell" this is actually a political conference for all intents and purposes since the conference will be attended by two coalition ministers, one from Meretz, and some of the topics are Meretz members and party employees.
