Firefighters discovered the victim's body on Saturday. An autopsy should be performed to find out the causes of death.

He had been missing since the start of last week.

On Saturday, firefighters discovered the body of a 75-year-old man at the bottom of a well in the town of Chavaignes, in Maine-et-Loire, reports

.

His relatives had given the alert to the authorities on Friday, after having remained without news of the victim since Tuesday.

Sent to reconnoitre the town, the emergency services therefore discovered the remains of the disappeared man at the bottom of a well which happens to be adjoining three properties, including that of the victim.

The gendarmes were responsible for making the first observations on the spot, while the corpse was extracted from the well and sent to the forensic institute for autopsy, in order to certify, or not, a criminal track.

The Saumur prosecution, initially seized, relinquished jurisdiction and the investigation is now in the hands of the criminal department of the Angers prosecution.
