(CNN) -

Kentucky Derby-winning horse Medina Spirit died Monday at Santa Anita Racecourse in Southern California, according to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB). .

Medina Spirit collapsed near the finish line just as he was completing a workout and was killed immediately, the CHRB told CNN.

"Following the completion of routine morning training, Medina Spirit collapsed on the Santa Anita Park track and died suddenly of a probable cardiac event according to the veterinary team that treated him," Santa Anita Park said in a statement.

The news was also confirmed by his trainer, Bob Baffert, a member of the Horse Racing Hall of Fame, who said the 3-year-old champion colt died of a "heart attack" after training, but the racing board will not determine the cause of death until necropsy and toxicology testing is complete.

The exam and tests will take place at the University of California, Davis.

"My entire barn is devastated by this news," says Baffert's statement.

"Medina Spirit was a great champion, a member of our family that everyone loved, and we deeply regret his loss. I will always cherish the personal and proud memories of Medina Spirit and her tremendous spirit," he adds.

Medina Spirit's legacy (and controversy) beyond the Kentucky Derby

In addition to being an exciting racehorse, Medina Spirit was the subject of one of the sport's biggest controversies in America earlier this year.

After crossing the finish line first in this year's Kentucky Derby, the horse failed a post-race doping test.

Trainer Baffert was subsequently banned from fielding any horse at Churchill Downs Racecourse for two years, following confirmation through a test of the presence of a legal drug that is banned on race day.

Later, Baffert made an extensive statement in which he claimed that an ointment used to treat dermatitis could have caused the positive result.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission said the investigation into the test is ongoing and paid tribute to the thoroughbred.

"The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is saddened by the news of Medina Spirit's death. He was a valued member of the Thoroughbred industry horse racing family, he said."

Medina Spirit raced four more times after the Derby.

He finished third in the Preakness Stakes and won two races at California.

He also came second at the prestigious Breeders' Cup Classic in early November.

He won half of his 10 career starts.

A statement from the Santa Anita racecourse confirmed that a full autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of the sudden death.

The racecourse has an unwanted history of equine deaths, prompting one led to an investigation in 2019.
