BRUSSELS - Green light

from the EU Council to start negotiations for the introduction of the European minimum wage

.

The OK to the Commission's proposal came from the meeting of the European ministers for Labor and Social Policies, marking the formal start of the negotiation process with the European Parliament, which has already given the green light to the procedure.

"We cannot accept that people who put all their energy into work cannot afford decent living standards. This law will be a big step for fair pay", commented Janez Cigler Kralj

, Minister of Labor of Slovenia, president on duty of the EU Council.

The EU directive for the introduction of the minimum wage gives

"a strong response to two phenomena that characterize the labor market: wage dumping and the presence of many poor workers"

, which "unfortunately mark the Italian labor market". Thus the Minister of Labor, Andrea Orlando, on the sidelines of the Labor and Social Policy Council in Brussels, underlining that the green light to start negotiations is

"good news for Europe but also for Italy

". This is "an important step in the direction of building a social Europe", underlined Orlando, explaining that "the directive defines the path through which countries can strengthen bargaining".

"

We are facing a decisive stage for the realization of a social Europe",

 said

the minister

during the public session of the Council, where the responsible ministers agreed their position on

the European directive on the minimum wage

to kick off to negotiations with the EU Parliament.

"

I firmly believe that the directive under discussion lays the correct methodological foundations

to guide Member States in addressing" the wage issue, the minister underlined, highlighting that in Italy the situation is "aggravated by pirate contracts" and it is therefore crucial to promote a "quality collective bargaining". On this aspect, the EU directive "appropriately recognizes the specificity, prerogatives, principles and constitutional values of the member states".

"We know that the balance reached is very sensitive and that a delicate confrontation with Parliament will open, I am sure that through dialogue we will be able to find the right way to continue building a socially strong, equitable and inclusive Union - added the minister - . The directive says something of great political significance:

it is not acceptable for work to condemn one to a condition of poverty, we should all be fully satisfied with this statement ".
