Opinion | Miss an opportunity left and right Israel today

2021-12-06T23:28:46.684Z

A strange and impractical government like this could in the end also be a great opportunity • But what will happen is only actions and changes that are possible under the auspices of the political power

Close your eyes and think about the following scenario: Minister of Internal Security Amar Bar-Lev forms a special team with Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Minister of the Interior Ayelet Shaked, and together they present the government with an emergency plan to prevent immediate flare-ups of riots, and to resolve urgent crime in the sector The Arab: Thousands of soldiers and policemen, emergency budgets, a hard hand that also includes a few disproportionate actions for the sake of hearing and seeing, a huge Julian-style enforcement blitz, lights and fire and smoke transformations.

Who will prevent the three from doing so?

nobody.

The main coalition partners will be supported;

Meretz and the Arabs will resist and revolt, but if the plan is serious, there will be support from the opposition.

No one on the right would dare to point a finger at a government that walks proudly and acts contrary to its political position.

The natural tendency is to expect each camp to keep its natural promises, which is true of course, but political wisdom, and especially historical wisdom, shows that solutions are embedded in the exact opposite situation.

Right-wing governments or right-wing defectors have made the biggest territorial concessions here, because only then could it have been made.

The most blatant actions against Arab citizens are signed by left-wing governments.

Why?

Because they can, and only they can.

Well, even the current government, which faces a huge challenge in the arena of internal relations between Jews and Arabs, can make history.

And now you can open your eyes and relax from the dream, because it's not going to happen.

The maximum that happened is the controversial weapons collection operation, in which few pistols fell in the hand of many policemen and nothing more.

Nothing big is going to happen.

Another scenario: There is a heated debate these days between the members of the coalition regarding the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court. Among the decision-makers are two who until a minute and a half ago were at the forefront of the right-wing struggle to change the face of the court: Gideon Saar and Ayelet Shaked. Both state that they did not abandon the traditional right-wing positions they held, and only took an emergency step to save Israel from the chaos that threatened to destroy it. Why should not the ministers Saar and Shaked take advantage of this spectacular constellation, and press for the appointment of right-wing and faithful judges to the Supreme Court? After all, such an opportunity will never come back! Both the opposition will support and the majority of the coalition will treat with drowsy forgiveness, since since the government is in the left hand, the issue of the composition of the court becomes secondary in his eyes; So why not?

One could put up ten more such glorious scenarios and realize that a bizarre and impractical government like this could have, in the end, also been a great opportunity.

Both to the left and, here and there, to the right.

That's not going to happen, probably.

What will happen is only actions and changes that are possible under the auspices of political power, but lack the historical and responsible wisdom of seizing the opportunity.

Therefore, in addition to the very sin of establishing this awful government, it will also bear the brunt of the stigma of missing out.

By the way, if she had tried to take advantage of the constellation, she would have made many of her opponents forgive her for the very fact that she exists.

In the meantime it is not happening at all.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
