NASA announced a list of 10 astronaut candidates among 12,000 applicants who want to represent the United States and "work in space for the benefit of humanity," according to a NASA statement.
Among the candidates is Marcos Berríos, a 37-year-old Puerto Rican who was born in Guaynabo.
Berríos is "a test pilot and has a BA in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an MA in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University," according to the POT.
The ten candidates will begin a two-year training program in January 2002.
When the training ends, according to NASA, the candidates could be assigned to different missions "aboard the International Space Station, being launched from US soil in ships built by commercial companies, as well as deep space missions to destinations that include the Moon ”.
