Surprising data: The number of suicide attempts in Israel decreased by 12% during the Corona period Israel today

2021-12-06T20:04:37.664Z

Contrary to claims during the closure period, there was no increase in the number of suicide attempts - quite the opposite • In general, in 2020 there were 6,217 suicide attempts compared to 6,859 in 2019 (9% more) and 6,781 in 2018 (8% more)

After many people threatened that this step would lead to an increase in suicides during the corona closures, a segmentation of the number of suicide attempts by the Ministry of Health, which summarizes the data for 2020, indicates that this is not the case.

In January-February last year, those that preceded the first closure were actually worrying compared to previous years - in which 523 suicides occurred in January and 560 in February (compared to 508 and 514 in 2019 and 508 and 531 in 2018 respectively).

However, precisely during the period of the first closure, there was a significant decrease compared to previous years.

In March, for example, there were 477 suicide attempts - compared to 543 this month in 2019 and 576 in 2018.

Overall, in 2020 there were 6,217 suicide attempts compared to 6,859 in 2019 (9% more) and 6,781 in 2018 (8% more).

If we refer to the corona period alone, ie the months of March to December 2020 - then the number of suicide attempts in this period stands at 5,134.

In the same period in 2019, 5,837 suicide attempts occurred (12% more);

Whereas in the same period in 2018, 5,796 suicide attempts were made (11% more).
