Hundreds of thousands will fast from sunrise to the rising of the stars on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 • During this fast, it is customary not to eat or drink, but it is permissible to continue with the routine of life - including work.

The fast of Tevet 10 will take place this year on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. The fast begins from dawn until the rising of the stars, when it is customary not to eat or drink.

Unlike Yom Kippur, in this fast it is permissible to shower, wear leather shoes and continue with the routine of life including work.

Fasting hours:

Jerusalem: 5:19

Tel Aviv: 5:21

Haifa: 5:22

Beer Sheva: 5:19

Fasting departure times:

Jerusalem: 14:19

Tel Aviv: 14:56

Haifa: 16:55

Beer Sheva: 17:00

The fast is a fast commemorating the beginning of the Babylonian siege of the walls of Jerusalem, a siege that preceded the destruction of the First Temple and the Babylonian exile. This is one of the four days of fasting in memory of the destruction: Gedaliah's fast, 17 Tammuz and 9 B'Av. The families of those who perished hold a memorial service, say Kaddish and study Mishnayot for the upliftment of their souls.

According to tradition on this day Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon began the siege of Jerusalem in 588 BC.

This siege ended a year and a half later with the destruction of the First Temple and the exodus of the people of Israel to 70 years of exile.

Even today, thousands of years after this event, many across the country and the world still commemorate the destruction of the house of God by fasting.

Rabbi Zvi Yehuda HaCohen Kook called on this day to strengthen the walls of Jerusalem and build the land "in spirit and matter."

In addition, this day marks the death of Ezra the scribe and the translation of the Torah into Greek, two events that took place on the 8th and 9th of Tevet.

Unlike the big fasts, on the tenth of Tevet there are facilities for the sick and the elderly.

Rabbi Eliezer Melamed stated that patients, and those whose pain or weakness does not allow him to continue with the routine of life and he is forced to lie down - they are allowed to eat.

Pregnant and lactating women are also allowed to eat and drink.

Soldiers engaged in security activities, which may be harmed due to fasting, will eat and drink as usual, but soldiers during training must continue to fast.
