South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the mutated Omicron strain of the Corona virus has become the dominant strain in the country.

"The daily average number of people infected with the Corona virus has increased fivefold, and most likely the Omicron strain is now dominant in all types of Corona virus in most provinces," Ramaphosa said in a statement carried by the TASS news agency.

Ramaphosa called on all citizens of the country who have not yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated against the virus and the Omicron strain because it is the most effective way to prevent new diseases and reduces the number of severe infections with the Corona virus, hospitalizations and deaths.

South Africa has recorded 3,31,694 injuries so far, while the total deaths amounted to 89,966 cases.
