The general director of the Colombian National Police, General Jorge Luis Vargas, said on Tuesday that there is a high probability that the leader of the FARC dissidence, Hernán Darío Velásquez Saldarriaga, better known as alias “El Paisa ”, has died in Venezuela.

Vargas said that "there is a very high percentage of him who is dead" as a result of disputes within the organization in an area of camps in Venezuela, about 160 kilometers from Arauca.

El Paisa is one of the leaders of the now demobilized guerrilla group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia that rejected the peace agreements signed with the government and chose to continue in the armed struggle.

  • Alias 'El Paisa', one of the "most violent and bloodthirsty" FARC dissidents

The Venezuelan authorities have not yet reported on the alleged death, which was reported in the Colombian media last weekend.

CNN contacted the Venezuelan Ministry of Communication and Information on Tuesday to find out if they handled official information on the matter, to which they answered "no."

General Vargas explained that El Paisa had been established in that camp for about two years and that in another they were training "criminals from various countries."

In addition, he added that the dissident was killed by a person known as "Lulo."

“Everything seems to be a matter of disputes over drug trafficking.

Specifically, in that same place we know that there were some coves with several hundred thousand dollars very surely related to that, which the sources so far have indicated to us, ”said the head of the National Police.

The crimes of alias El Paisa

El Paisa became the leader of the mobile column Teófilo Forero, one of the ranks of the FARC's most important guerrilla groups, and was once described by former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez as one of the most violent and bloodthirsty guerrillas in that organization.

According to the Colombian Prosecutor's Office, the ex-guerrilla caused the death of 36 people in the El Nogal Club, injured 158 and caused considerable material damage.

For this attack, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison on September 11, 2009. The Prosecutor's Office charged him with the crimes of terrorism, aggravated homicide, and manufacturing, trafficking, and carrying firearms or ammunition.

This Tuesday, the Colombian media Semana and El Tiempo reported on the death, also in Venezuela, of Henry Castellanos, alias “Romaña,” another former leader of the FARC dissidence.

The Director General of the Police stated that this information is being verified.

For his part, the president of Colombia Iván Duque considered before the media consultation that it is "good news" that "these symbols of terrorism, evil and drug trafficking are out of circulation."

According to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), Romaña is linked to Case 001, known as that of kidnapping.

CNN consulted with the Ministry of Communication and Information of Venezuela, where they indicated that they had no information about the alleged death of Romaña.
