A 13-year-old boy was killed and a 9-year-old girl was injured Monday in a Los Angeles shooting near an elementary school, local authorities reported.
A woman was also shot and wounded, according to Officer Mike Lopez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
The child and the woman were in a car in the Wilmigton neighborhood of South Los Angeles around 4:45 p.m. when
at least two people approached and opened fire on the vehicle,
according to local newspaper The Daily Breeze.
The woman drove away from the scene, but then stopped and someone alerted the 911 emergency number of her condition.

The child was pronounced dead in hospital while the woman, who is believed to be 20 years old, was stable but in critical condition after undergoing surgery, according to the aforementioned media.
So far there is no information on the possible relationship between the child and the woman, and on the identity of the victims.

Neither the description nor the motives of the suspects behind the shooting have been released, according to Adrian Gonzalez, captain of the Los Angeles Police Department.
"This is a great tragedy. Gun violence has destroyed too many lives in this country and has terrorized another community tonight," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.
"I am praying for the family of this little boy and for the recovery of the girl and the young woman," he added in a statement.
