In an accident at the Bergen military training area, two members of the armed forces were killed on Tuesday afternoon.
According to initial information, a battle tank rolled over a jeep of the troops on the Bundeswehr firing range.
A Bundeswehr driver and a soldier who watched the maneuver of several tanks from the jeep were apparently dead immediately.
At the firing range, the German armed forces mainly train with "Leopard" tanks, which weigh a good 60 tons.
How the tragic accident came about is now to be determined precisely by the Bundeswehr.
Lambrecht cancels the planned ceremony
The report about the tragic accident in Bergen caused concern in Berlin, it burst in the middle of the ongoing handover of the ministry from Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to her successor Christine Lambrecht.
The minister immediately decided that a formal farewell planned for the evening by her State Secretary Thomas Silberhorn was canceled.
The designated chairman of the Defense Committee was concerned.
"My thoughts are with the relatives of the two victims of this tragic accident," wrote FDP MP Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann on Twitter.
The inspector of the army also wrote about "a tragic incident" on Twitter.
