Dorfen

- Corona has exacerbated the situation of people who had problems before the pandemic.

“Many people have no idea what poverty is in our country - but also what loneliness there is, especially among older people,” reports Ruth Wildgrube, the former chairwoman of the Dorfen Neighborhood Aid.

At the annual general meeting in the summer, she gave up the chair.

For the local newspaper and “Licht in die Herzen” (Light in the Hearts), the woman from the village looks back over lockdown and the time of crisis.

“It doesn't really work,” says Wildgrube.

At least the volunteers of the Dorfen neighborhood help try to help wherever there is a need.

Seniors, single mothers and socially disadvantaged families are among the customers of the Dorfen neighborhood.

“We look for individual solutions and support,” says the retired elementary school teacher, “and we usually find them too”.

The neighborhood help is an important component in the city's social network.

"We do what a good neighbor would do," she explains the philosophy of the association.

Relatives do not always live on site, friends are missing, or the partner has died.

That is why the voluntary helpers step in, accompany people to the doctor or physiotherapy, visit senior citizens or sometimes help with moving.

The NBH is also the operator of the Dorfener Tafel.

Now 69 years old, Wildgrube passed the baton on to 35-year-old Paulina Stimmer in the summer.

To be at the head of the club for another three years - that would have been too much for her.

The second half of her term of office was extremely difficult, she fell in the middle of the Corona crisis.

"That was an extreme situation that was very stressful." Nevertheless, she remains loyal to the neighborhood help as an assessor on the board.

Pandemic and lockdown, that was a time that demanded a lot of strength and energy from you and all volunteers, sums up Wildgrube.

"At first I used the phone to my ears sore, there was no more headset available."

But it quickly became clear that right now many seniors needed help.

Many young people who were in the home office got in touch.

An emergency shopping service was quickly set up.

"Later we took care of vaccination appointments and drove those who had no one to the vaccination center or to the doctor."

In normal times, the neighborhood help invites you to lunch for senior citizens in the parish home once a month.

“The food was already cooked, then the contact was blocked,” recalls the former chairwoman.

“We decided spontaneously to deliver.” The campaign was so well received that the team delivered the lovingly cooked food twice a month: “There was always a small greeting, a present, with the wrapped portions - everything with a margin, of course. "

The feedback was overwhelming: "The older people were so happy that someone came at all." Because the regular visits by the volunteers had to be canceled.

The same scenario also applies to the Tafel customers, who continued to depend on food. “They couldn't come to the issue, so we packed bags and delivered to the people.” But that's not all. "We also looked after the children during homeschooling so that they weren't left behind in school - hardly any family that is dependent on social benefits has a printer at home," says Wildgrube, and says: "Neighborhood help already has one Top team. "

In general, the cost of living increased during the lockdown.

“That was a big problem when the utility bills came.” Children and parents, at home all day - the computer was on and the heating needed more.

“You don't get very far with the Hartz IV rate,” says Wildgrube.

"I am also convinced that people not only need the essentials of life, but also small pleasures." These include vouchers for the swimming pool, the bookstore in Dorfen and the exchange center - or just an ice cream in between, at the expense of neighborhood help.

The fourth corona wave is now here, and it's Christmas time.

The NBH Dorfen will also be active again in Advent.

In some institutions in Dorfen, small Christmas trees are displayed on which customers' wish lists hang.

And on December 21st there will be the Christmas special edition of the Tafel again.

At this time there are always special foods in the bags: coffee or Christmas stollen and honey, for example.

More than 150 affected people will come to the table again this year.

The primary school students from Schwindegg also get gifts - as they do every year, so that every child in the municipality receives a present on Christmas Eve.
