A former member of the Syrian jihadist militia Jabhat al-Nusra has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

The State Security Senate found the 31-year-old Marius A. guilty of membership in a terrorist organization abroad, the court announced.

The German therefore traveled to Syria in October 2013 and was a member of the Al-Nusra Front until the end of March 2014.

The Jabhat al-Nusra is a powerful offshoot of the al-Qaida terror network in Syria.

In 2016, she officially split off from this.

In order to support the jihadist militia, Marius A. had himself trained on the weapon.

In the years that followed, he was available to the Al-Nusra Front as a fighter.

According to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, he took part in combat operations at least once.

Money raised for groceries

In addition, A. is said to have asked three of his acquaintances to collect money for him in Germany for food and a night vision device.

The original co-defendants Mohamed S., Maher M. and Avid EGM transferred the money to Turkey, where the defendant received it.

On this occasion he is said to have picked up money for another member of the militia and then passed it on.

A. was caught in Senegal last year and transferred to Germany.

He has been in custody since May 6, 2021.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The Federal Court of Justice would decide on an appeal.

According to the court, the proceedings against the three other originally accused have been separated and have now been finally discontinued against payment obligations.
