After cultivating it and running it throughout the spring and long summer, the cooling of the weather forces us to part with our favorite outdoor spaces - the terrace and the garden. But it really does not have to be that way. If you think about it, in the Israeli weather, most winter days are much more pleasant for sitting outside than most steamy summer days.

Today, more than ever, there is a fit and harmony between the home space and the exterior, whether a balcony, a small garden or a spacious yard. "Today, the ambition more than ever is to create an active, dynamic and designed outdoor space that manages a perfect synergy with home interior design - regardless of the change of seasons," says Barbara Berzin, interior designer and owner of an interior design school.

Interior designer Aviv Hermoni adds, "The outdoor space has become invested and important, and the corona has only increased its importance in the eyes of customers. The general public is spending more and more time in the outdoor spaces - whether these are balconies, roofs, gardens, etc." "Which increases their importance and the need to invest in them so that they are durable throughout the year and in all weathers," adds Aviv Hermoni, interior designer.

Before you start - why do you use your balcony?

Before you start adapting your balcony to the winter, think about how you use it and what functional needs it fulfills for you. Is it for children's leisure and ball games? Is it intended for hospitality - and if for hospitality then hospitality in free seating or hospitality around a dining table? Is there a BBQ on the terrace? Swings? When you think about all the questions and answer them, you will know exactly what you need on your porch.

If your balcony is a place to stay, you need to know what to do with the outdoor furniture: "Most furniture is not resistant to the strong Israeli sun so it is important to find a beautiful and ugly cover to cover it when not hosting. It is important to cover it especially in winter On the furniture and the sun burns them and destroys the furniture, "says Berzin.

She recommends choosing furniture from natural materials that will wear less like straw or rattan.

If the terrace is large enough, you can combine both a dining area and a sitting area, if it is small - you will have to choose.

"Most people host on the terrace and of course all accommodation also includes food, so a nice dining table with chairs is the preferred function," says Berzin.

Furniture made from natural materials will wear out less, but do not forget to cover the furniture so that it will last for a long time.

Adapting the vegetation to the winter

"Israelis like to turn the balcony into a small garden, but most of the time it will not be well-kept," says Berzin, recommending taking an example from the Greeks.

"The Greeks have a great style of balconies - where the whole terrace is paved and in two large pots they plant a dwarf lemon tree and in two jasmine for a good smell. That way your balcony will look neat and patterned."

If you still decide to plant, you should choose perennial vegetation, rather than plants that each season need to be replanted.

And if your heart is still inclined to a certain seasonal plant, it is better to dedicate a large jug or a flat bowl to it and you will know that only there you invest and change seedlings every season.

"You should not enslave the garden and complicate it, make your life as easy as possible," concludes Berzin.

3 types of lighting

An important issue and certainly on the balcony intended for hospitality is the issue of lighting, and this is especially true for the winter when it gets dark earlier.

According to Berzin, the lighting should suit three scenarios: dimmed light for a romantic evening, strong light for an event with a lot of people and lighting for the seating area only.

Using charcoal bulbs will give a feeling of real fire and will greatly add to the atmosphere.

And colored bulbs placed inside the vegetation will provide magical ambient lighting.

In most balconies you will have to choose - a dining area or a sitting area.

Heating aids

To enjoy the balcony even on cold days, you should place a heating mushroom on it, of course it is better to buy one in the summer because then the price is much cheaper.

The heating mushroom also adds to the overall atmosphere on the terrace and invites everyone to curl up around it.

"Since the balcony is not an integral part of the house, it is more possible to" go wild "with different colors and a different style than the one you chose inside. Says Berzin.
