More than 40% of French people believe they lack the money to live satisfactorily, according to a study

According to the second edition of the Observatory of the meaning of money produced by Vivavoice for Crédit Coopératif, more than 62% of French people believe that earning more is an important objective.


While inflation is now part of the daily life of the French with in particular a rise in consumer prices of 2.8% over the last twelve months, 4 in 10 French believe they lack the money to live satisfactorily.

Consequently, according to the second edition of the Observatory of the meaning of money * produced by Vivavoice for Crédit Coopératif, more than 62% of French people believe that earning more is an important objective. "

This objective is linked to a feeling of lack more than a specific relationship to money,

" says the study with 89% of French people who perceive money above all as a means of protection.

However, more than 4 in 10 French people (41%) still consider money as a lever to change the world.

A more pronounced opinion among young people: 56% for 18-24 year olds and 53% for 25-34 year olds.

Money is gradually moving from a simple means of consumption to a lever for action to change society.

The French feel concerned by this change in the use of money, ”

highlights the study.

In this sense, 74% of respondents go so far as to estimate that their commitments could have an impact on the choice of their everyday consumer products.

In addition, it also emerges from this study that the French have more and more facilities to talk about money.

Indeed, for 40% of French people, money is often discussed with their relatives.

A subject that is more often mentioned among young people since they are 56% of 18-24 year olds and 59% of 25-35 year olds to talk about it.

* Interviews conducted online from October 1 to October 15, 2021 with a sample of 1,030 people, representative of the population living in Metropolitan France aged 16 and over.

Representativeness ensured by the quota method applied to the following criteria: sex, age, profession, region and category of agglomeration.
