These corpses, most of which were locked in sealed plastic or wooden boxes, were discovered after the hospitalization of this 81-year-old pensioner, according to the regional daily

Nice-Matin

.

Several animal protection associations were called to the rescue by the niece of this man who discovered the mass grave.

An open investigation

A total of around 100 dead cats were found in and around the house, along with the remains of squirrels, rats and a dog's jawbone.

An investigation was opened "

on account of acts of cruelty to animals,

" Nice public prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme told AFP.

"

Most of the cats were dead when they were placed in these boxes with regard to their position, but it is believed that at least two may have been locked up alive

", explained to AFP Philippe Desjacques, president of La Tribu du Anteater, one of the associations which intervened with in particular ASA 06 (In the service of animals) or La vie plus belle within the collective Urgence pour un animal (UPA) 06.

The corpse of a cat, probably partly devoured by its congeners, was discovered on the sofa of the house.

More than twenty cats still alive but rickety were saved and were entrusted to veterinarians or volunteers.

Unfortunately, we see stories like this every year,

” explained Philippe Desjacques.

The retiree suffered, according to Philippe Desjacques, from Noah's syndrome, a mental disorder which consists of taking in more animals than one can house or feed properly, as well as from Diogenes syndrome which results in a compulsive accumulation of objects.
