With the participation of Syria, the work of the 22nd session of the Transport and Logistics Committee of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which started yesterday in Cairo, continues.
The committee reviews developments in the field of transport and logistics in member states, discusses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Belt and Road Initiative and its repercussions on the Arab region, the results of a project on sustainable land transport, and the latest developments in traffic safety issues.
The work of the session, which concludes today, will include a workshop on the challenges of transitioning to the digital model of the international cross-border transport agreement in the Arab countries.
The Syrian delegation, headed by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ammar Kamal Al-Din, put forward a set of interventions on the recommendations implemented by the committee in its 21st session, and what was accomplished at the level of transport projects in Syria, legislation and the most important measures of this sector to face the repercussions of Corona.
The Deputy Minister stressed the importance of joint Arab action for the success of any ESCWA program, calling on the committee to seek with international bodies to lift the unjust coercive unilateral sanctions against Syria and to provide technical support to the transport sector in it to enable it to keep pace with the rapid developments in transport patterns.
Representatives of 16 countries, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, the Arab Federations of Land Transport, Chambers of Maritime Navigation and Railways will participate in the course.
The Syrian delegation includes Director of Syrian Railways, Najeeb Fares, and Director of Planning and International Cooperation at the ministry, Sinan al-Khair.
