The best wireless headphones of 2021

2021-12-07T22:29:21.257Z

AirPods ushered in the cable-free craze, but there's a huge amount on offer and these are the best of the year.

AirPods may have ushered in the wire-free craze, but these days, there seems to be an endless influx of wireless earbuds.

And we spent countless weeks, turned into months, putting headphones of all price points to the test.

With so many options out there, CNN Underscored en español set out to find the best, just like we did with the over-ear headphones of the year.

Keeping pace with our own tests, we discovered the best true wireless headphones out there.

Beats Fit Pro: Best Wireless Headphones for Apple Users

The Beats Fit Pro packs everything we love about the AirPods Pro into a sportier, safer, and more affordable package, making them our new favorite headphones for people in the Apple ecosystem.

True to its name, the Beats Fit Pro really stand out when it comes to fit and comfort.

They are rubberized, have a unique wingtip design, which provides additional support for your inner ear without feeling intrusive or heavy.

We also appreciate that you get three sets of interchangeable silicone ear tips, and just like on the AirPods Pro, you can do an ear tip fit test to find the correct size. In addition to their impressive comfort, the Fit Pro is also some of Apple's best-looking headphones to date. There are in black, white, gray, and purple which is a nice variety compared to the white-only AirPods.

They have active noise cancellation (ANC), a transparency mode to amplify the outside world, and all the usual benefits of Apple hearing aids, including instant pairing with Apple devices and the ability to control Siri hands-free. The Fit Pro's noise cancellation performed quite well in our tests, doing a good job of muffling (but not completely silencing) the sounds of a subway car or a noisy construction site.

The Beats Fit Pro are best suited for those in the Apple world, as you'll get all of the above advantages, as well as a very painless pairing process for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. But unlike the AirPods Pro, the Fit Pro are also quite good if you are on an Android device. The Beats Android app lets you take advantage of almost every key feature, including the ability to change sound modes, customize controls, and perform an ear tip fit test. Android users will have to live without a few perks, including Find My support to track down your lost hearing aids and automatic switching between paired devices.

They also have one of the longest-lasting batteries that reached almost 7 continuous hours with ANC on and allows us to go about three days of normal use on and off before having to charge the case.

That tops the six hours and 10 minutes we got from the AirPods 3, as well as the five hours we saw from the AirPods Pro.

The only notable downside to the Beats Fit Pro is its charging case, which is quite bulky.

The AirPods Pro case is much more compact and, unlike the Fit Pro, it can be charged wirelessly.

Best True Wireless Earbuds for Android Users: Galaxy Buds Pro

Buy them on Amazon:

USD $ 159.99 /

 MX $ 3,755

Thanks to the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, Android users have a worthy alternative built specifically for those who are not tied to the Apple ecosystem.

While these Buds will work well with an iPhone, they offer tons of useful features exclusively for Android phones, not to mention strong Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and the ability to let in outside noise when you need it.

While not on the level of the AirPods Pro, the noise cancellation of the Galaxy Buds Pro is solid for a pair of headphones that kills many of its competitors in terms of price.

In our head-to-head tests against the AirPods Pro, the Buds Pro noticeably muffled the sounds of nearby cars, people, and street chatter.

However, the Buds Pro really shine when it comes to letting the outside world in.

Like the transparency mode on the AirPods Pro, the Ambient Noise feature on the Buds Pro uses the headphone microphones to amplify the sounds around you so you can better hear things like incoming vehicles or someone in your house trying to talk to you.

And if you're on Android, you can switch between four different noise levels depending on how well you want to hear your surroundings.

That ability to customize your ambient noise comes in handy.

Other useful features exclusive to Android owners include the ability to switch between multiple sound presets, customize the Buds Pro's touch controls, and activate the Bixby virtual assistant with your voice on Samsung devices.

Sleek features aside, the Buds Pro are simply a great pair of wireless headphones.

They're the most stylish and comfortable headphones Samsung has made to date, with a sleek, curvy design that comes in Phantom Black, Phantom White, and an especially beautiful Phantom Violet.

And thanks to their IPX7 rating, they withstood splashes of water and kept going.

The Galaxy Buds Pro did very well in our call quality tests, producing clear voice recordings that were largely on par with the AirPods Pro in terms of overall clarity.

Our voice sounded bright and crisp on Samsung headphones, albeit a bit more distant than on AirPods.

Samsung's headphones lasted about five hours straight with ANC on, and about two days of mixed on-off use with the charging case.

That's largely in line with Samsung's own estimates of four and a half hours with ANC on and up to 28 hours with additional features disabled while using the case.

Best budget headphones: EarFun Air

Buy them on Amazon:

 USD $ 49.99 /

 MX $ 1,749

We'll make this really simple for you: If you want to spend less than $ 100 on wireless headphones, you won't find a better pair than the EarFun Air.

We know it may sound almost too good to be true, but these headphones have just about everything you could ask for.

Let's start with the sound, which is as good as the Apple AirPods Pro in controlled, quiet, and indoor settings.

The sound is expansive, deep, and almost as good as any high-end option.

However, keep in mind that the EarFun Air does not have any active noise cancellation and is completely dependent on the sound insulation created by the soft plastic tips when inserted into the ear canal.

We test these headphones in a wide variety of music genres, including classical, rock, pop, and dance.

In all categories, the EarFun Air shone.

Songs like Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" were fueled by hard-hitting bass lines and electronic rhythm sections.

Other iconic songs like Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" were balanced, with moments of clarity in both the high and low end.

We had a hard time finding any song that didn't sound great on these headphones.

For most people, the high-quality sound is probably a big enough selling point, but in case you're looking for extras, the EarFun Air packs a lot of features. One of our favorite additions is an IPX7 waterproof rating, which means they can be submerged in about 1 meter of water for about 30 minutes. We don't often see waterproofing on such cheap devices, so of course this was a huge plus and one that we gladly accept.

Beyond sound and microphone quality, the EarFun Air headphones have an impressively long battery life with a full seven hours of playtime, as advertised, with an additional 28 hours in the case.

Although we were skeptical that they would last as long as the company promised, our weeks of testing showed these claims to be true.

In comparison, the Apple AirPods Pro and Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro offer quick pairing and easy switching between devices made by the same company.

The touch controls on the EarFun Air were simply less useful than any of the more expensive Apple and Samsung options we tested them with, but we found that we could still very easily control the sound through our phones.
