Karl Weiß is terminally ill.

His last mission: In an Instagram video, he calls on politicians to finally ensure better working conditions in nursing.

Wartenberg / Walpertskirchen

- If a terminally ill asks someone for something, can you refuse that request?

It remains to be seen whether Karl Weiß 'words will be heard in politics.

As reported, the Walpertskirchener suffers from an incurable brain tumor.

His final mission is to work to improve working conditions in the care sector.

In collaboration with the staff of the Wartenberg Clinic, he shot a video in which he made politicians responsible: “Don't understand this as an appeal, but as a request - so that you too will be cared for in several years, when the time comes ", says Weiß in the almost four-minute clip that the clinic

Nursing emergency in Bavaria: the terminally ill makes politicians responsible

White wants to draw attention to “one of the most important social issues.

“Nursing care in Germany is in a miserable state,” says the 63-year-old, who means, among other things, the difficult working conditions and staff shortages, but also the pay that can be expanded, which dominates the public debate.

“With the video I hope to set a small flame in society that is allowed to develop into a conflagration,” says Weiß.

In his view, politicians have been discussing improvement measures for decades, "but no target-oriented actions are derived from them".

White warns: "We all don't know when we will be dependent on the lovable attention of our fellow human beings."

Karl Weiß suffers from an incurable brain tumor - his last mission is to leave a good mark

For Weiß, this fate came completely unexpected in November 2019.

The diagnosis: glioblastoma, an incurable brain tumor that always grows back, no matter how often it is removed.

Until then, Weiß was “in another world”; he worked in construction management, an “elbows out” industry, as he himself says.

But that was history after the diagnosis from one day to the next, now other values count.

According to statistics, only 14 percent of patients survive the first two years.

White now belongs to this small group.

After his tumor returned despite three operations, Weiss and his family decided against a fourth operation.

In July he suffered an epileptic fit and a cerebral hemorrhage that resulted in hemiplegia.

In the meantime, through the mediation of the Erding palliative care team, he came to the Wartenberg clinic's palliative care ward.

Then the father of two went home to Walpertskirchen.

However, since the care effort became too great, Weiß is now in the hospice in Vilsbiburg.

The gratitude of a terminally ill person: Karl Weiß fights for better conditions in the nursing professions

“In the clinic, I was allowed to experience a kind of human affection that was never thought possible,” says Weiß in the Instagram video. She made it so much easier for him "that I can hardly describe it with these dry words". His image of man has completely changed. "This experience not only helps me deal with the disease, but also has far-reaching positive changes in my personality structure."

The subject of time is particularly important to white. Often the overworked nurses would not have enough of it to be able to take care of their patients adequately. Weiß 'gaze is directed far beyond the box of palliative medicine, because precisely in palliative care the time is still taken as he can tell from his own experience. As reported, the Walpertskirchen native collected donations out of his infinite gratitude and ultimately handed over a matrix mobile worth 4,300 euros through the Friends of the Wartenberg Clinic, which helps to better relieve tension.

But he doesn't want to leave it at that.

Weiß now hopes that those who have watched his video will work for a better situation in nursing: “We finally have to move forward and not just have pithy discussions in the Bundestag that lead nowhere.” His last mission should be a success be crowned - even if he will no longer experience it himself.
