The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, warned that the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories has reached “catastrophic” levels due to the continuous violations of the Israeli occupation and its settlers against the Palestinians.

According to Wafa Agency, Bachelet's warning came during a briefing she gave before the United Nations Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which is currently being held in the Swiss city of Geneva, on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

“The human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories can be described as catastrophic, and it is clear that it will have devastating effects on the prospects for reaching a settlement of the Palestinian issue and sustainable development,” Bachelet said, stressing that ending the occupation is the only way to achieve peace between the Palestinians and the occupying entity.

On the other hand, Bachelet expressed her fears of the increasing cases of attacks on Palestinians by the occupation forces and settlers, which led to the death of 16 children in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem this year, calling on the international community to assume its legal responsibilities to hold the occupation leaders accountable for their violations and crimes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that the continuous daily settlers’ attacks against Palestinians are now at “alarmingly high levels,” noting that last year witnessed 490 attacks by settlers that resulted in the death or injury of Palestinians, as well as causing severe damage to their property, which is higher The rate of settler violence ever recorded by the United Nations.

Bachelet indicated that the Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip for years has led to a sharp deterioration in Palestinian human rights, especially children, as 75 percent of them need psychological support as a result of their exposure to excessive violence by the occupation forces.
