The Chinese Embassy in Australia announced today that Australia's success in the Beijing Winter Olympics depends on the performance of its athletes and not on the presence of its officials.
This came in response to the statements of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who announced earlier today that Australian officials will not attend the Winter Games in Beijing.
"According to the Olympic rules, eminent personalities are invited by their National Olympic Committee to attend the Olympic Games and it is up to them to decide whether to send the invitations," an embassy spokesperson was quoted by Xinhua as saying.
The Chinese embassy renewed its call on Australia to take practical and tangible measures to create appropriate conditions for improving relations between the two countries, stressing that the decision not to send officials to the Beijing Winter Olympics contradicts Australian statements about the so-called "hopes for improving relations between the two sides."
