The booster vaccine has reduced corona virus mortality by 90% among people aged 50 and over, according to a huge study by the Clalit Health Fund today (Wednesday).

The research team analyzed using advanced statistical methods data from 843,208 Clalit patients aged 50+ (mean age 68.5) who received the second vaccine dose, which were dynamically divided into two groups, based on booster dose status.

Among recipients of the third vaccine dose (one week or more after receiving the booster dose), a 90% reduction in COVID-19 mortality was observed.

Whereas among men a reduction of 88% was recorded and among women a reduction of 94% was observed, compared with the group which received only two vaccines.

The study compared the mortality rates from Corona in the population that received a booster dose compared to the mortality rates in the population that was not vaccinated with the booster dose and was performed during the Delta Wave, between August 6, 2021, one week after the booster vaccination in Israel, until September 29, 2021. Clalit Community Division and published in the leading medical journal New England Journal of Medicine.

An earlier Clalit study conducted by Prof. Blitzer and published about a month ago has already shown that the booster vaccine has reduced by 93%, a serious illness by 92% and by 81% mortality associated with corona disease.

According to Dr. Doron Netzer, Head of the Community Medicine Division at Clalit Health Insurance Fund, who conducted the study with Dr. Ariel Hamerman, Dr. Shlomit Yaron and their colleagues: "Including the Delta strain. There are very few interventions in the medical world that can be attributed to a 10-fold reduction in mortality risk, as we found for the booster vaccine."

Dr. Netzer added that "these findings provide important and research-based information for the population in Israel and other countries that are still undecided about administering a third vaccine dose.
