Re-cultivating sugar beet in Syria is an important step to provide sugar in the local market, partially dispense with importing it and restart sugar factories.
The head of the Agricultural Crops Department in the Directorate of Plant Production at the Ministry of Agriculture, Eng. Ahmed Hamidi, indicated that more than 31 tons of beet seed were distributed, and the planting process began on 10-15 and ended on 11-30, when 1615 hectares were planted out of the total plan amounting to 4,385 hectares, with an implementation rate of more than 35 percent distributed in the Al-Ghab area of 1586 hectares and in Hama 29 hectares.
Hamidi pointed out that government agencies are working to secure the requirements for the success of beet cultivation by securing the farmers’ need for seeds, fertilizers and fuels, pointing out that the lack of rain has led to farmers’ fear of cultivation and the low rate of implementation in the Hama and Al-Ghab regions.
Hamidi suggested rehabilitating sugar factories in all areas to increase the areas allocated for beet cultivation.
It is noteworthy that the date for harvesting the beet crop begins in mid-June next year.
