The Indian Air Force said one of its helicopters crashed on Wednesday with the country's top military official on board, reportedly killing at least four passengers.
The Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, was one of 14 people on board when the helicopter crashed en route from Sulur to the Tamil Nadu city of Wellington, the IAF said.
Rawat's status was not immediately clear.
The causes of the accident and the details of the other passengers are not yet known.
At least four bodies have been recovered from the crash site, according to state broadcaster Doordarshan News and the Press Trust of India, a cooperatively owned news agency of Indian newspapers.

Three people have so far been rescued and taken to a hospital, according to Doordarshan.
The IAF said that "an investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident."

Rawat was appointed Chief of the Defense Staff of India in December 2019. Prior to that, he was the Chief of the Army Staff.
During a career of more than 41 years, Rawat commanded several battalions of the Indian army.
He received several awards for his service.
