The majority of Germans hope that the new Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) will lead Germany through the corona crisis better than his predecessor Jens Spahn (CDU).

In a survey for SPIEGEL, almost two thirds of those surveyed (65 percent) said that they hope Lauterbach will improve their corona crisis management.

According to the representative Civey survey, however, 30 percent do not expect any positive changes.

(More about the Civey method can be found here.)

The supporters of the SPD and the Greens are particularly optimistic about Lauterbach, the supporters of the AfD are particularly pessimistic, followed by the FDP supporters.

There is also great hope for better crisis management among Union voters.

A majority of 61 percent of people who lean towards the CDU or CSU hope that the new health minister will better handle the corona crisis.

There are also differences in the age groups: the positive expectations are greatest among those over 65.

The coronavirus is particularly dangerous for the elderly group.

The differences among 18 to 64 year olds, on the other hand, are comparatively small.

There are also differences between East and West Germany: In the west of the country, 66 percent expect improvements with the Minister of Health Lauterbach, in the east this proportion is 56 percent.
