"So far, 55% of people in Latin America and the Caribbean have been fully vaccinated against covid-19," said Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization ( OPS).

During PAHO's daily briefing, Etienne also noted that there are still too many unvaccinated people, saying: "Twenty countries in our region have not yet reached the WHO year-end vaccination coverage of 40%."

According to Etienne, countries such as Guatemala and Caribbean islands such as Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines "lag behind" in terms of vaccination levels.

Etienne also said that "more than 1.6 million doses are being delivered to countries in the region and a total of 72 million doses are being completed so far and we expect more doses to arrive in the coming days."
