Castillo says that vacancy motion against him is unsupported 3:49
(CNN Spanish) -
The plenary session of the Peruvian Congress rejected this Tuesday to debate the vacancy motion against President Pedro Castillo.
The proposal that sought to remove Castillo from office was promoted by the opposition groups of Fuerza Popular, Avanza País and Renovación Popular.
However, the plenary finally rejected it: it had 46 votes in favor, 76 against and 4 abstentions.
The motion against him stated that Castillo "is a dangerous person for democracy who, if he is not vacated, will affect all Peruvians as he has been doing with those who live in extreme poverty."
It was based on 7 points, including the alleged "illegal use of public funds" in the 2021 campaign of Peru Libre, the party that led Castillo to the presidency.
Days ago, Castillo, who took office on July 28, denounced that the purpose of the motion was "to vacate the president without any support."
"Since my government began, a minority of political parties and economic groups did not accept the electoral result and have always sought to undermine the popular will; they never accepted that a peasant, a teacher, would lead the nation and promote structural changes in the country." Castillo said.
