The civil union for people of the same sex is a reality in 28 of the 193 member states of the UN, according to a 2020 report from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) .
In addition, 30 non-independent territories and an additional state that is not a member of the United Nations "also offer legal equality in matters of marriage," according to ILGA.
Chile recently joined the list of countries that approve same-sex marriage after the approval of a bill that regulates same-sex marriage.
In 2020, Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to legalize it.

Countries that criminalize homosexuality
Worldwide, 67 UN member states, nearly half of them in Africa, still criminalize consensual sexual activity between adults of the same sex, according to the 2020 ILGA report on State Homophobia.
The ILGA report includes Botswana, but in mid-June 2019, this country removed the laws that punish such relationships in a historic victory for LGBTI movements in Africa.
Africa, Asia, and some countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and Oceania still consider consensual sexual acts between adults of the same sex as illegal, according to the recent ILGA report.
These acts, according to some laws, are considered as "acts against nature", "sodomy" or simply, "homosexuality".
