The decision comes: will the new editions be cut short? | Israel today

2021-12-08T06:59:17.412Z

Following the campaign: This weekend, the council of the second authority is to decide whether to oblige Keshet and Reshet to shorten the editions, which currently last about an hour and a half.

Close to the decision: The Second Authority Council, headed by the chairman of the Second Authority Council, Yulia Berkovich, is expected to convene tomorrow and decide on the issue of the length of the main news editions.

As is well known, the Second Authority Council raised the issue of the length of the issue, and in recent months a network protest has arisen in which more than 4,000 complaints were received from viewers at home, who were fed up with the long news editions.

As part of the authority's role, the second authority commissioned a broad survey and focus groups, in which it was found that more than 70 percent of the viewers at home support shortening the new editions.

Most respondents think that a news release should not last more than 40 minutes.

In the reasons given by the respondents to the survey: "Our patience has been shortened", "digging", "too much information" and more.

Senior Keshet and Reshet officials oppose shortening the editions, especially Keshet.

The main reason is money.

Shortening the news release will force them to produce more content with a larger investment.

It is estimated that tens of millions of shekels a year can go to local artists, but in the end they are added to the huge profits of the two bodies.

"Where is the livelihood for the hundreds of families in the television industry and the production of quality content to enrich the cultural life of the residents of Israel?" Producer and agent Shai Nesher told council members.

"In 2020, Keshet earned more than NIS 100 million and the network several tens of millions - and what did the people of Israel get? News, news and news again, and there are almost no external productions."

The length of the editions on the commercial channels has changed from time to time: half an hour, an hour, and in recent years there has been a stabilization of more than an hour and a half gross, including quite a few minutes of commercials.

In an article published this week by Prof. Akiva Cohen on the "Seventh Eye" website, he stated that "out of 117 major editions broadcast in 51 countries from all continents, 92 editions (79%) last only up to an hour."

In recent weeks, Keshet and Reshet officials and members of the board of directors of both channels have been invited to the council to discuss the issue.

During the meeting with council members, senior officials believed that the authority should not interfere with the length of the edition, and if it decided to shorten its length it would be a "death sentence" that would lead to a "wave of dismissals".
