A helicopter carrying the commander of the Indian Army crashed today (Wednesday) in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the country's air force said.
According to the announcement, the 63-year-old Bipin Rawat helicopter was "involved in an accident" in the Conor area.
A senior military official told AFP that the helicopter contained the general's wife and other officers on their way to a military college.
His official position is as head of India's Defense Staff, created only in 2019.
He is considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Videos posted on channels in India showed burning remains at the site of the crash, in a wooded area near the college they were supposed to reach.
The helicopter, a Mi-17V5 made in Russia, reportedly took off from the Solor Air Force Base and some of the passengers were evacuated to a hospital.
The Air Force announced that it had begun investigating the circumstances of the accident.
Rawat grew up in a family with a military background, and some of his family members served in the armed forces of India.
The general, who had served in the army for four decades, commanded the forces in the Indian part of and the Chinese border.
To his credit is the decline in fighting on India's northeastern border and he has commanded cross - border operations against rebels in neighboring Myanmar.
