(CNN in Spanish) -
A Peruvian Air Force helicopter disappeared on Tuesday while flying from Lima to the jungle as part of a humanitarian mission, the Peruvian Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement late at night.
The helicopter, a Russian-made model MI-171SH, took off from the capital's Jorge Chávez International Airport at around 11:52 am local time, the document added.
It is unknown how many crew members and / or passengers were on board the flight, whose purpose was to provide support to the PIAS Program of the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion of Peru.
The flight plan would initially take the aircraft to San Ramón, Chanchamayo, where, after a technical stopover, it would continue to its final destination in the city of Pucallpa.
The device, however, never arrived and, according to authorities, it had a last contact at 12:49 pm local time.
The Peruvian Ministry of Defense immediately began an air rescue operation with two military aircraft.
However, due to bad weather conditions in the area, search efforts were suspended.
In parallel, the Peruvian Institutional High Command ordered the transfer by land of Special Forces patrols, qualified in search and rescue, in order to intensify work in the area, the statement said.
