The Saxon AfD member of the state parliament Ivo Teichmann is in the hospital due to a corona infection - and continues to question the benefit of vaccinations.
The 54-year-old said he had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 despite a lung disease.
Teichmann had already admitted himself to the university clinic in Dresden last Thursday after days of fever.
The corona infection was found there.
In the past he had spoken out against putting pressure on unvaccinated people to get vaccinated.
In the hospital, he received oxygen and antibody therapy, writes Teichmann on Facebook.
He thanked the nurses for their "self-sacrificing work" and shared a photo from his hospital room.
"We are all learners in this pandemic"
The AfD politician told the “Bild” newspaper that the vaccines were not a “panacea”: “We are all learners in this pandemic.
I'm not saying the vaccination won't work.
[...] Everyone should decide for themselves.
My result is still open. ”He would have received“ good arguments against the vaccination ”from his family.
Teichmann's attitude is in contrast to the findings of science: Vaccinations against corona protect very well against the course of severe disease, and the risk of infection is significantly lower for those who have been vaccinated.
Most of the infections are currently due to unvaccinated people, and the majority of people in intensive care units in Germany are also unvaccinated.
Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) made the AfD jointly responsible in the Dresden state parliament for the worsening of the corona situation in the Free State: "You have a great responsibility for how things are currently in this country." He also referred to Teichmann.
While he was in hospital, the AfD was mobilizing at the same time in Pirna for a demonstration against vaccination and an alleged "Corona dictatorship," said Kretschmer.
The party's behavior has caused great damage.
At the same time, Kretschmer wished the MPs a "speedy recovery".
Teichmann is "an example (...) that in Saxony all people regardless of the person or their political stance" are medically treated equally.
