The town hall of Laillé, south of Rennes, where a motorist recently died after a hunting accident, confirmed on Friday that it had withdrawn an order prohibiting hunting within 150 meters of homes in order to limit the proliferation of wild boars.

"

We have adapted the decree to maintain stricter rules while relaxing the provisions so that hunting can resume,

" the first deputy mayor Anne Châtelain Le Couriaud told AFP on Friday, confirming information from the daily Ouest- France.

A new municipal decree dated December 2, published on the town hall's website, underlines "

the need to reconcile the imperatives of public order and security with the implementation of effective means to regulate the overpopulation of wild boars.

On October 30, a motorist driving on the 4 lanes between Nantes and Rennes was injured by a 9.3 mm bullet fired by a hunter.

The 67-year-old driver died a few days later in hospital.

After this accident, the mayor of Laillé Françoise Louapre had issued an order prohibiting the use of rifles (whose range can reach 2 km) in the town as well as hunting within 150 meters of homes.

Annoyed by the decree, the owners of private hunts (16 in number in the town) had decided to stop the wild boar hunts, thus accentuating the fears of farmers of seeing their crops ravaged by herds.

"

The decree as it is written will allow the resumption of beatings

", estimated Ms. Châtelain Le Couriaud.

"

Rifle shooting will be authorized with firing back to homes and therefore towards forests and fields,

" she said.

However, the municipality wishes to find an agreement with the Hunting Federation for the establishment of "

fixed days without hunting

" in Laillé, in order to allow the population to walk around without fear.

"

Hunters have every interest in changing their regulations if they do not want to find themselves increasingly excluded from society,

" said the first deputy.

They will have to adapt if they want to preserve their leisure time.
