The midline affair Israel today

The pro-Israel New York mayor elected to office, the mobilization in Congress to fund the Iron Dome and support for the Ben & Jerrys affair

To the Chancellor.

To Cancel.

That is, to cancel, delete, exclude, take out of the circle of legitimacy.

This is one of the harsh tools that the extreme left in the United States uses against those for whom the connoisseur acted immorally.

Israel, for example, has long been a consul. It is so-called "conquering and oppressive" with another, and so on and so forth.

But the purge campaign is beginning to tire of the Americans.

Both within and outside the Democratic Party, many signs point to a decline in the power of the extremists, as will be detailed immediately.

If the trend continues, and there are good reasons to believe that it will happen, then the power of the anti-Israel group in Congress is also likely to weaken.

This is at least the assessment of factors in the Israeli system, active in the American arena.

The latest victim of the progressive purge campaign was supposed to be US Congressman Jamal Bauman.

Bauman, a black politician and socialist, was elected to office only a year ago, with a strong push from the extremist circles in the Democratic Party.

Through a successful campaign, and against the backdrop of George Floyd riots, hatred of Trump and an effective election campaign, Bauman won the Democratic primary in Elliott Engel.

From the moment he won the primaries, it was clear that he would be elected to Congress, since his constituency, River Dale, north of New York, is automatically democratic.

The loss of Engel, the veteran, Jew and pro-Israel, shocked Israeli fans.

Many saw the exchange of shifts between the two as evidence of the Democratic Party's growing distance from Israel, and of the rise in power of its opponents.

Bauman, among others, is supported by Bernie Sanders and the DSA - the "Democratic Socialists of America".

The well-known member of Congress, Alexandria Oxio Cortez, is also an ally.

And here, one year after eliminating his pro-Israel rival, Bauman also found himself mocked by his friends.

The DSA management convened this week for an urgent discussion on whether to remove him from the ranks of the organization.

The reason: Although Bauman continues to condemn Israel this morning and tonight, he dared to visit Israel, meet with Prime Minister Bennett, vote for Iron Dome funding and not support BDS.

For the extremists, this chain of crimes was unforgivable.

Finally, realizing that it would be a political mistake to lose a congressman on their behalf, Bauman "only" snatched condemnation from his partners.

"There is no excuse for Congressman Bauman's decision to increase funding for the Israeli army, nor for his participation in a propaganda campaign for Israel, aimed at giving legitimacy to an apartheid state. Every person committed to the liberation of Palestine has a responsibility to oppose the Israeli propaganda machine. Bennett, an unapologetic racist and war criminal, "I have killed many Arabs in my life - and I have no problem with that," the organization said in a statement.

Signals from Ohio

The removal of Bauman and others from the extremist circles of the Democratic Party is not accidental.

In his constituency there are many pro-Israel Jews.

They may have fallen asleep on guard in last year's election, but Bauman needs their fingers in the midterm elections to be held in a year.

So while he did not become a supporter of Israel, he was careful not to cross red lines, such as supporting BDS.

He does this probably also because of the big political picture.

In both intra-democratic struggles and confrontations with conservatives, far-left elements in the Democratic Party - who usually also express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel views - have been receiving discrimination after discrimination in recent months.

Here is a partial list.

Eric Adams, a black politician, mainstream Democrat and pro-Israel, was elected mayor of New York.

He won the Democratic primary in the AOC by a progressive candidate supported by the AOC.

The choice of 61-year-old Adams, who has been a police officer for 25 years, is interpreted here as a desire by New Yorkers to restore law and order to the city, and to clear the streets of the homeless masses who filled it during his predecessor.

In his election campaign, Adams stressed his opposition to the demands of the progressive purists to stop funding the police, and even came out frontline against threats directed at him by the "Considered Black Life" movement.

He put, therefore, a limit to extremism - and as mentioned won.

In Ohio, in the Democratic primaries, the black and pro-Israel candidate, Shontel Brown, defeated a progressive and anti-Israel rival. Massive aid from the "Democratic Majority for Israel" lobby led to its victory. Jews wearing kippahs stood beside her and her black supporters at the victory party in August. "My Jewish brothers and sisters," she called them, dedicating her remarks to the importance of contact with Israel.

In the primaries of the Democratic Party in the city of Buffalo, a few months ago, veteran mayor Byron Brown lost to the Socialist candidate, India Walton. The Democratic establishment, from Chuck Schumer to the AOC, sided with Walton, assuming that the party's automatic majority in the city would ensure Walton's victory. But Brown was surprised. He ran as an independent candidate and won an overwhelming majority in the fifth term. Another case where a clear boundary was set for the extremists.

Even in the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where George Floyd was assassinated two years ago by a white police officer and subsequently riots broke out across the U.S., those who called for budget cuts to the police eventually lost. Common sense prevailed over purity.

And more signals.

Democrats have suffered a string of losses in local elections in early fall in many U.S. counties. more convenient for Israel.

In this context it is worth mentioning that the mobilization of the Democratic leadership, Congress in Washington passed a huge majority of the budget to fund iron Dome. only 8 of the 221 Democratic members of Congress voted against, and that in itself gave a clear pro-Israel. it is worth mentioning that it was a Republican senator, Rand Paul, is the one who is currently sticking now the budget ratification for Iron Dome, and not the Democrats.

"New political atmosphere"

Another landmark is the boycott of ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's, which has become a double-edged sword. Many U.S. states are withdrawing their investments from parent company Unilever, which has already lost 13 percent of its stock market value.

The embarrassing interview given by the company's founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Springfield, to a young interviewer who tried to understand their motives - became a joke. When asked why they do not boycott other countries in the world that they believe violate human rights, or countries in the US that prohibit abortions, they were simply left speechless

. No one deceives himself that the campaign is over. On the contrary, the new Israeli consul in New York, former minister Assaf Zamir, and the consulate staff, are devoting much effort to strengthening progressive elements who are also supporters of Israel. Their goal is to disconnect the automatic identification created between progressiveness and anti-Israel.

But the sequence of events outlined above gives them optimism.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us. After two years of Corona, a political crisis in Israel and tensions between Democratic Jews and Netanyahu's governments, a lot of work is needed. But we seem to have passed the low point when it comes to anti-Israel trends in the Democratic Party. Define them as a rejection of the purist progressive positions.

"These processes do not happen because of Israel and are not related to it, but they do have a positive effect on it," say Israeli sources active in the American arena.

As in any political process, and certainly when it comes to a huge country like America, the picture is always made up of other diversity as well.

Congresswoman Betty McCollum of Minnesota has managed to get 30 of her colleagues to sign a bill that effectively denies Israel security assistance.

It is clear that the law will not have a majority, but the initiative itself is problematic.

Congressman Andy Levin of Detroit, a close ally of Rashida Talib, signed 40 of his colleagues to a law that conditional aid to Israel on advancing the two-state idea, and only blames Israel for the lack of peace with the Palestinians.

In general, three years ago the anti-Israel group numbered four members of Congress.

Last year it tripled its power to 12 people.

This trend, and the deep familiarity with American politics in general, leads pro-Israel elements in the Democratic Party to disagree with the Israeli assessment that the worst is behind us.

"It is true that in the new political atmosphere it is already less popular to talk about the cessation of funding for the police, and today you will not find 40 members of Congress who will sign such a law.

But, the law against Israel will find such support, so I would not say that the worst is behind us, "says a senior political adviser, who is well aware of what is happening and supports Israel.

"What? Almost everywhere Israel's supporters entered the arena and fought, their hand was on the top. There have not been many struggles in the past year, so elements such as the Democratic Lobby for Israel could direct efforts and funds to the few places where internal elections were held, as in the case of Shontel Brown. It can be said that Israel's supporters in the Democratic Party have won several battles, but not yet the entire campaign. Next year, the midterm elections will be held there, and many arenas await them. The trend is positive, but they still do not have the means and capabilities to be everywhere. The Democrat still expects a big task. "
