Professor Zhang Huimin, director of the Asian Supply Chain and Logistics Research Institute of CUHK, stated on the Hong Kong and Taiwan program "Hong Kong Letters" today (11th) that Hong Kong’s mid- to long-term economic outlook depends on the integration and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Professor Zhang Huimin, director of the Asian Supply Chain and Logistics Research Institute of CUHK, said on the Hong Kong and Taiwan program "Hong Kong Letters" today (11th) that Hong Kong’s mid- to long-term economic outlook depends on the integration and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Logistics services are the key to connecting the meridians of the Greater Bay Area and achieving seamless exchanges of cargo flow, capital flow and information flow.

He said that in terms of capital flow, Hong Kong's trade linkage platform is trying to connect with mainland trade financing platforms.

In terms of logistics, it is necessary to build a smart logistics platform in the Greater Bay Area to connect the existing large and small operating platforms in the region to promote and track the trade and logistics conditions in the Greater Bay Area.

He believes that when smart logistics platforms and trade financing platforms are further connected across sectors, the Greater Bay Area will be able to exert its global economic competitiveness and strengthen Hong Kong's role as the region's international finance and international trade.

Zhang Huimin said that many young people in Hong Kong feel that logistics is a sunset industry, so they are unwilling to join the logistics industry. "In fact, as long as there is business in this world, there is a demand for logistics services." As a commercial center, Hong Kong is also an international market. As a trading hub, the logistics service industry plays an indispensable role.

In supporting commercial activities in the city, logistics services provide merchants with traditional inventory, sorting, and distribution tasks, as well as emerging services such as food delivery in and out of the city, online shopping and home delivery, and provide solutions for the general public during the epidemic. Many people’s livelihood problems have been solved, and even the mode of life of the masses has been changed to a certain extent.

Under the influence of the epidemic, another new normal has been further promoted, which is cross-border e-commerce. Cross-border e-commerce has replaced part of cross-border trade. The rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce is dependent on huge Logistics Services.

Zhang Huimin said that today's logistics industry has forged an indissoluble bond with technology.

Using mobile devices to exchange messages through online platforms is just a basic skill.

Real-time tracking using QR codes, radio frequency identification, global positioning and video transmission has become a standard service requirement for many customers.

Some logistics companies are also actively investing in unmanned driving, robotic operation, big data analysis and artificial intelligence optimization to develop their competitive advantages in the industry.

Therefore, enterprising logistics companies are no different from technology companies.

In the past 15 years, Hong Kong has bred 18 start-up unicorn companies, three of which are logistics companies, including Kuaigou, Huolala and Aftership, and these companies are based on the application and development of technology.

He believes that Hong Kong’s mid- to long-term economic outlook depends on the integration and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and logistics services are the key to connecting the Greater Bay Area’s meridians and achieving seamless exchanges of cargo, capital and information flows.

There are three customs and three currencies in the Greater Bay Area. In order to open up the meridian, in addition to the policy support of the central and regional governments, the construction and connection of an information platform is also needed.

When smart logistics platforms and trade financing platforms are further connected across different fields, they will be able to bring into play the economic competitiveness of the Greater Bay Area facing the world, and it will also consolidate Hong Kong's role as the region's international finance and international trade.
