Netanyahu himself is entitled by virtue of being a former prime minister to close security and an armored vehicle with a driver for 20 years from the end of his term - these are the security arrangements of his family members, accompanied in recent years by security guards, a driver, and an attached vehicle. Yair and Avner Netanyahu were the first children of the prime minister to enjoy close security, which continued even when they were adults who left the prime minister's residence. Former GSS chief Yoram Cohen said in an interview in 2018 that he did not think there was a need for permanent security for Netanyahu's children, but over the years the family claimed that due to the threats they needed the security envelope, and the security department in the Prime Minister's Office recommended accordingly. 

In January this year, when Netanyahu and the Likud were still in power, the Ministerial Committee on GSS Affairs, then headed by former Minister Eli Cohen, actually extended the security period for the family - to one year from the end of his term, but the GSS position was only six months. The Ministerial Committee convened again, and decided to shorten the security period to six months, in accordance with the GSS recommendation.

The Netanyahu family now wants to return to the previous decision and extend security for another six months.
